Pen Movement Interface

Post  Anthony on Sat Nov 20, 2010 10:46 am

From my previous email:
I've been thinking about making something like the pen in [You must be registered and logged in to see this link.] , where for instance you are able to drag pictures between your own computer and main office screen to share with other people.
It would require us to make a device that can plug into PCs and wirelessly transmit between another PCs and the pens. The pen movement would also need to be tracked probably by cameras attached to the PCs or by accelerometers inside the pen. There would be a bit of circuit design but probably a large amount of programming. It would most likely be similar to doing ESI, just on a larger scale.

If anyone wants to do this, I'm open to suggestions for improvement, but we need to write up a proper spec, and I think talking to William Shieh would be good, as he supervised the group that did the minority report thing this year.
To extend upon this, when I say drag pictures I mean, someone has a picture on their computer that they are just looking at in a picture viewer. They could drag that window across to another PC, which would first transfer the file across, and then open it on the other PC. You could use it for any program, but of course you would have to wait for the file to transfer across and then the program to open. Since pictures are small it's easy to demonstrate how it works without having too much of a delay. Text files could also be used. There could of course be an option to just take a screenshot and move that image across, rather than any random file.

In terms of practical use I was thinking of a graphics office which has a big screen at the front of the room. All the employees would have their computers so they could see the big screen. When one person has completed some part of a project, they could move it up to the main screen for everyone else to see and either get ideas from or drag to their own computer and further edit it. It could also be used in a conference room when people are brainstorming ideas.

In terms of hardware we'd need something with wireless capabilities. Arduinos have add-on boards which could work or perhaps some completely different device altogether would work. We would need to interface it with the computer to both receive feedback from the camera tracking the pen, send pen button presses to the PC, and to transfer the files between the PCs. The pen would also require wireless capabilities to transmit the button press (and accelerometer data, if used).

Me and Clarence are both really interested in your idea, i mean, it's not a sex octopus but it's still pretty cool =D

Akiv also expressed interest in this project, so perhaps we could form a group of 4, considering there are quite a few parts to this project. I'll start writing up a proper complete spec to show to supervisors, and then we can go and talk to them this week, maybe after one of our exams.

ok yeah sure, don't worry too much about me and clarence if supervisor thinks you don't need as many as 4 or something, the other projects i listed in the other thread me and clarence are fairly interested in aswell.

we'll probably all discuss in detail after ESI exam.

and ancient fucking egyptians are way cooler than 70's african americans kk? farao

this project sounds cool, i might want in. Maybe with the pen it might be too hard to track the motion when someone throws picture from their screen to another. An option could be to just have the pen act basically as a wireless usb device that might grab a file that is currently open on a given computer by pointing at a webcam or something and could upload to a pc via the same method, as well as move objects around a single screen with pen. pen would have 3 buttons, upload, download and click. Of course throwing a picture to another pc would be alot cooler
